Who is Jon Fixx?

If you’ve been following this blog, you probably know by now that Jon Fixx is the title character in a just published novel by author Jason Squire Fluck.

But who really is Jon Fixx?

At the heart of it all, Jon is a hopeless romantic, a “creature of love”, beginning with his first crush in elementary school.  Since that time, though, Jon has struggled with love, carrying the romanticism of his 12-year old mind into his adult love life.  One after another, his girlfriend’s find love elsewhere while still dating him; he just can’t figure it out.  He’s attentive, available, and puts his girlfriend’s needs before his at all times.  But despite all his efforts, his relationships end in broken-hearted tragedy. For him.

Ironically, Jon has learned how to make a living writing about love. After dropping out of college, he floated around for a time, struggling to write his great American novel as the ending constantly eluded him.  One night while on a break from his not-so-bad waitering job, Jon uncharacteristically shared some of his unpublished writings with a female co-worker who was engaged.  In a moment of serendipitous brilliance, she asked him to write about her romance with her fiancee.  She had met her soon-to-be-husband overseas and theirs had been a whirlwind romance—so, what better way to help her friends and extended family get to know him than with a novella about how they met, their courtship, how they fell madly in love?! Jon demurred.  But she would not accept “no” and with her father on the ticket, Jon was offered more money than he made in three months. In the end, Jon could no longer refuse.

Within a year of this life-changing moment, Jon stopped serving and was writing full-time. Perhaps not writing his great American novel, but writing none-the-less.  He met couples who were on their way to the wedding chapel, interviewed family, friends, co-workers, and the couple themselves.  Then he wrote the couple’s story always with a sprinkle of Hollywood romance and a breathless Cinderella like ending.  Each novella became the talk of the wedding reception.  Within a few years, Jon had more business than he knew what to do with.

Jon, though, doesn’t consider himself to be all that special, or talented, or, well, romantic. His love life is, to say the least, disappointing.  But soon, Jon will meet the daughter of the head of the New York Mafia.  And she is engaged to a rising star in the Mob (think Henry Hill in Goodfellas).

Jon’s life is about to become far more complicated and intriguing than anything he has ever experienced, or he could have ever imagined.  Ever.
